Foreign Movie Madness weekend!

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Alot of movie watching this weekend! Three movies, all foreign, all worth watching.

Son of Rambow is a cute, coming of age film about two english boys from opposite worlds that make a film. This one is targeted to the quiet filmmaker in all of us.

Save the Green Planet is a fantastic Korean film from 2003. It doesn’t fit nicely in any genre/category and is really a great movie. Creative and odd.

And lastly, Code 46. A futuristic romance which reminds me little of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind meets Gattaca. Not the best sci-fi out there but worth watching if you like that sort of thing.

All three films have some sort of social and political commentary. Never overt or over the top, they all do a great job placing the plot and characters in a larger world context. Save the Green Planet is a real standout.

Animation Vacation

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

This past weekend was all about the animations. Saturday afternoon, I watched Alvin and the Chipmunks with Raven (he’s 10). Alvin is a cute but awful movie. Raven didn’t even seem entertained by it either. The only enjoyable actor was David Cross. He’s funny and appropriately evil. David up, chipmunks down.

Saturday night, I watched Stewie Griffin:The Untold Story, a Family Guy animated film. On Sunday, I watched Bender’s Big Score, a Futurama feature length film. Both animations used time travel as a major theme in the animation. Not something I planned (not jonesing to go anywhere, promise!), but the time travel concept was much appreciated.

The real treat was last night, The Book of the Dead. Japanese puppets and stop motion animation together to tell a story about a lady and a dead dude. Beautiful and romantic, this is a must watch now.

Where it may seem like I am watching films and being unfocused, I was studying my ass off the rest of the time. Animations are perfect brain vacation.
